As a native Staten Islander, the TGJ gang wanted to help bring a little comfort and relief to some of the hardest hit areas of NYC in our home borough. Once I had power restored late Friday I ran to restaurant depot and bought up 1,000 hot dogs and buns, 100lbs of Polish sausage, and some other random supplies.
We spent all day Sunday from 10am until 11pm with the tailgate trailer cooking and handing out the food and broadcasting the Sunday football game to the New Dorp beach section of Staten Island. Our first stop was the distribution center set up in the parking lot of New Dorp high school and Miller field. We set up here until they closed at 5pm. We then made our way to a second location right in the heart of Sandy’s destruction at Cedar Grove at the bottom of New Dorp lane at the beach.
We handed out plenty of food and tried to provide at least a temporary break from the misery set in to so many for a few hours in what will be a long process of getting our community back on its feet. I didn’t take any photos of the storm’s destruction, there is plenty of that online and frankly, I was not there to be a tourist of others misfortune. I would like to give a thanks to a member of the TailgateJoe community, Anthony Mills for riding his motorcycle over with a delivery of cookies for the kids. Also, Crown Verity Grills, the official grill of TGJ. Their MCB48 and MCB72 grills were indispensable as they always are in getting lots of hot food out there into peoples hands no matter the weather outside.
